It’s the end of an era for The Adventure Zone podcast, but with that end comes all new adventures. The Dungeons & Dragons podcast created by Justin, Griffin, Travis, and Clint McElroy completed its first campaign called “The Balance Arc” in August with a dramatic finale. While the podcast was nearing its finale the McElroys made it clear that it would not be the end of the podcast, but instead it would be an opportunity to explore other game formats.

The hour and a half podcast was originally a special episode of the McElroy’s flagship podcast My Brother, My Brother, and Me. Demand from their fan base encouraged them to create the separate podcast on the Maximum Fun network with Griffin McElroy guiding the action as the Dungeon Master. The fan following of the podcast grew from only word of mouth advertising with the McElroy’s encouraging discussion. Fans tweeting “#thezonecast” had the potential to be a namesake for non-player characters, and could also suggest different items for the characters to purchase during the story at the “Fantasy Costco”. These interactive incentives created a large fan following of the show with groups on Facebook where fans can share different drawings and costume interpretations of the characters. Many fans hosted listening parties to celebrate the ending of the first campaign.

As the end of “The Balance Arc” drew near fans became concerned that the podcast would be officially ending. Griffin McElroy made an official announcement that they would be exploring a new story arc with new characters. In addition to all of the changes, Griffin will be stepping down from Dungeon Master and another McElroy will step into the shoes. The bi-weekly podcast will be exploring smaller games for several episodes before settling down on the next overall theme. Fans have made it widely known that they will be following the podcast as it enters into this new chapter.

The podcast will also see a release of its first quest adapted into a graphic novel, The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins, written by the McElroys and illustrated by Carey Pietsch. Published by First Second Books, the graphic novel is set for release in 2018 and is available for pre-order through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The new campaign of The Adventure Zone is set to begin in the coming months and is available through the Maximum Fun network of podcasts.
